Boyds of Bedford 2018 in Review
As we enter 2019 and come out of our first peak festive trading period, it seems like a great opportunity to reflect on what has happened for us in 2018. In reality this year in review really only covers September to December, as the idea of Boyds of Bedford was only conceived on the 16th of September when I (Tom) was at Hot Rod Drags at Santa Pod.
It's crazy to think what we have achieved in just over 3 months.
Prior to Boyds, Jessica and I had been running The Vintage Suit Hire Company (VSHC) successfully for 2 years and are proud to see it grow to having 4 outlets across the UK. It was always our intention to grow the retail side of our business and diversify away from solely providing handmade wool suits and their complimentary accessories, but we were finding that with VSHC having such a literal name (it does exactly what is says on the tin) it was difficult to shift our offering without compromising the brand.
Boyds of Bedford was born. Our desire to sell a broader range of clothing, grooming and gift products, allowing us to express our personalities to the full – after all, people can’t wear tweed suits every day!
So what is the Boyds ethos? Our intention is to offer timeless, stylish men’s products, inspired by what we are passionate about. Cars, bikes and all things vintage.
To date we are proud to have built a range incorporating some brands we really love. Our long-term collaborators The Bedfordshire Beard Co.; Wick and Woo, Gentlemen’s Hardware, Death to All but Metal, Two Gun Salute and of course VSHC.
In addition to these brands, we have been working hard on developing our own Boyds of Bedford product offering. This has grown so quickly and we are now proud to have a full printing setup allowing us to offer hand printed garments of our own design. We are also now able to offer printing services to other like-minded business looking for hand printed items.
So what does 2019 hold in store? We will be continuing to work with our friends and potentially other artisan makers who we feel fit in with the Boyds aesthetic and ethos. We will be looking to develop our own product offering further and hope to establish a core range of Boyds denim and leather products.
We remain focussed on hand-made and quality products, whilst offering great value for money, and will be taking Boyds on the road and bringing our goods to some of our favourite shows.
In addition to this (I am saying this publicly so I have some accountability), our plan is to have the Boyds of Bedford Café Racer finished and on the road in time to complete the Distinguished Gentlemens ride in Cambridge.
2018 has been a blast, but we are only just beginning. BRING ON 2019!!!
